Cordyline got its name from its mighty underground root. The plant is primarily decorated by its deep burgundy leaves, but it also has flowers, which it bears in summer in fragrant, white, terminal clusters. It needs sunny or partly shaded spots and well-structured soil. Its water needs are moderate, and watering is necessary during longer droughts. It can easily overwinter outdoors down to -6 °C, so it is recommended for yards with a sheltered microclimate. Since its leaves are not stiff, it can be tied together with a few ties and shaped into a compact column, which can easily be wrapped in bubble wrap. The soil around the roots should be protected with mulch or leaves. In colder areas, the plant should be grown in a pot and moved indoors during winter.
